Every season is suitable to visit Collodi: this center offers attractions not to be missed any time of the year. It is a place full of historical memories and beauties to admire: above all, it is inextricably linked to the life of Carlo Lorenzini, called Collodi, the author of the Adventures of Pinocchio. The writer and his mother were born here. First as a child and then as an adult, the protagonist of one of the most extraordinary world successes spent long periods here with the maternal family, choosing as a pseudonym to sign his works the name of this small town. By getting closer to the village you can see the ancient part of it, called Castle of Collodi, located at 244 meters above sea level. This has been reported from the end of the twelfth century as a village of military origin, since it was located on the border between the opposing territories: the Lucca and the Florentine one. Collodi Castello truly looks like a 'waterfall' of small houses climbed along the slope of a steep hill, almost held in the 'fall' by the imposing baroque architecture of Villa Garzoni, built on the ruins of the medieval castle. On the upper part of the village there is the Romanesque Church of San Bartolomeo, whose bell tower was probably part of the defensive system, of which parts of the walls still remain nowadays. These and other characteristic details of the village, perfectly preserved thanks to the prohibition of transit for motor vehicles, can be admired walking along its stone-paved alleys.
