Until April 20, 1998, the boulder was covered by about thirty centimeters of soil and vegetation.
On other smaller boulders around we had noticed cruciforms and cup marks.
From the largest boulder (the 'Terrinca' one, to be precise), which was slightly sloping, a clod of earth had broken away in the lower area: the rock and a small cruciform shape could be seen .
After a couple of days of work, once the earth and vegetation had been cleared, the boulder appeared with all its carvings.
About six square meters, about two by three.
Difficult to photograph.
It is easy to find cup marks and cruciforms around.
Which is no small thing. The rock is the quartzite-sericitic phyllite typical of the entire area.
The boulder is a short distance from the (practically disappeared) trace of an ancient path. The trail is clearly visible, but not on topographic maps; it was used up to more than a hundred years ago, as it went up from the Giardino valley in the direction of the Fordazzani pass.
The location is found in old maps with the name of 'il Pianaccio' (we owe to a careful researcher of historical paths, topographies, toponymy, Marino Bazzichi, the cartography of the territory that allowed us to get there: importance of lost memories) You can get there in no more than half an hour from the town of Terrinca; partly by mule track, partly by woods.
Faced with the complexity of the iconic world enclosed in the six square meters of the Terrinca boulder (a partial interpretation is not enough: the hunting scene, the men with the bow etc., it would be important to understand everything and here we are disoriented), we must admit that the interpretation cannot be unique or immediate.
The beauty of the image, the wisdom of the composition, the rhythm, the poignant essentiality are beyond question.
In purely aesthetic terms, the image speaks for itself. The undoubted presence of naturalistic and magical-symbolic elements requires a complex analysis.
Possible Christianization from anthropomorphic signs: to broaden the research, detecting what has been lost over the long term, also digging into the memory of places.
