The Museum of Sacred Art of Camaiore is located in a 17th century building, an ancient hospital located along the Via Francigena, which later became the headquarters of the Confraternity of San Michele Arcangelo, which reunited in 1893 with the other Confraternity of the SS. Sacramento and S. Vincenzo Martire.
It was inaugurated on June 9, 1934 under the guidance of Ugo Procacci, who was responsible for the first installation and cataloguing, with the aim of conserving and preserving the most important works of art from Camaiore from the risk of theft.
It was initially presented as a place for collecting furnishings, paintings, vestments, sacred furnishings from the 14th to the 16th century, coming from the main churches of Camaiore (Collegiata, S. Maria della Stella, S. Michele, Dolori, S. Croce and the Badia di San Pietro) and the territory (S. Margherita a Montebello, S. Ansano a Vado and S. Giuseppe a Greppolungo).
Over time, the Museum has enriched its collections, becoming the venue for important exhibitions and today it collects some of the most interesting local works of art. The museum's collection is divided into six rooms, which present important works of art, liturgical vestments, sacred goldsmith objects, paintings and wooden sculptures.
Among these, the visitor will be able to admire the well-known Virgin Annunciate by Matteo Civitali, which has regained its original appearance thanks to careful restoration, and an incredible variety of paintings including the polyptych by Francesco di Andrea d'Anguilla and the majestic altarpiece with the Madonna Enthroned and Child with Saints St. John the Baptist, St. Andrew, St. Peter and St. Sebastian.
This large painting, from the Church of S. Maria Albiano, is attributed to Vincenzo Frediani (1481-1505), perhaps the most typical and prolific exponent of Lucca painting at the end of the 15th century.
In addition to the precious liturgical furnishings and refined examples of sacred goldsmithery, the collection also includes a work of great rarity: an imposing Flemish tapestry dating back to the early sixteenth century and fortunately saved from an attempted theft in 1932.
These and many other artefacts make a visit to the Museum of Sacred Art a central experience for understanding the history of Versilia and learning about the fascinating Camaiore hinterland.
