The town takes its name from the castrum Martini, an ancient fortress from the 13th century. In that place there was also an ancient port with which, through the canals of the marshes and the Arno, the Municipality of Pistoia connected with the sea and its flourishing trade.
Also in the same area was the ancient hospitium of San Donnino, from which the current Parish Church of Castelmartini took its name.

Inside the church there are two pieces not to be missed: the eighteenth-century wooden crucifix of the main altar and a canvas from the first half of the eighteenth century, depicting Saint Joseph between Saints Anthony the Abbot and Donnino.
