The patriot Massimo D'Azeglio, married to the eldest daughter of the writer Alessandro Manzoni, was the promoter of a moderate vision of the Risorgimento. Together with other staunch supporters of the Unification of Italy in the summer of 1840 he lived in Seravezza where he completed the novel Niccolò de' Lapi. He wrote about Seravezza to his friend Tommaso Grossi: The town where we are is enclosed between mountains of marble, where there are quarries everywhere: the village will have a thousand souls. Good people, good language, good air: all together it's not bad.
