Already dedicated to Saint Francis, it was begun in 1523 by the Franciscans and consecrated in 1597 by the bishop of Luni-Sarzana Giovan Battista Salvago.
The current title derives from the female monastery of the Santissimo Salvatore, built around the middle of the 8th century by the Pisan Walfredo.
The monastery, belonging to the diocese of Lucca, was abandoned perhaps before 1000.
The church was destroyed in the 15th century and then rebuilt.
Restored around the mid-18th century, it was used for the care of souls.
It passed to the diocese of Pisa on 18 September 1798.
In 1847 it was reduced to a ward in the eastern corner of the Pietrasanta hospital and the parish was transferred to the church of S. Francesco.
