On the hills of Valfreddana, in the hamlet of Santa Maria Albiano, lies the town of Casciana, which preserves in its oasis of peace the Oratory of San Gaetano. A historic village, in which time seems to have stopped. The unique architectural importance of the temple is added to the valuable landscape characteristics of the area: a small, perfectly preserved traditional agricultural mosaic, in which the typical articulation of woods, olive groves and scattered settlements, a particularity of the Lucca countryside, is maintained.
Just two kilometers away is the Passo del Lucese, the southern gateway to the protected natural area of the Apuan Alps Regional Park.
It is here that a working group composed of young engineers from Valfreddana undertook in 2023 a restoration project of the Oratory financed by the PNRR, which is scheduled to end at the end of 2024.
