The Church of Sant'Antonio Abate, built before 1320, is one of the oldest in the city. It stands on the site where the Hospital of San Biagio once stood, run by the Company of San Biagio. In addition to carrying out public religious functions, the Company also had the task of assisting the sick, the poor and those condemned to the gallows.

Over time, the church has undergone numerous interventions that have profoundly changed its original appearance. Today it appears as a three-nave building, supported by two orders of columns in marble from the quarries of the Vicariate of Pietrasanta, the same quarries visited by Michelangelo in search of the marble for his most famous sculptures.

The Company of San Biagio, which over time became the Company of Sant'Antonio, expanded the church by building the choir and the new 'Roman' altar, embellishing it with stucco, wooden statues and other works of considerable artistic interest. Among these, the precious wooden organ from the 18th century, located above the main entrance, stands out.
