This itinerary extends along a coastal strip overlooking the sea, with an extension from north to south for approximately 7 km, and with a width varying between 500 m in the area near Viareggio and fifty metres at the mouth of the Serchio River, in the southernmost part, in the municipality of Vecchiano.
Thanks to the wooden walkways you can cross the sandy dune environment and the retro-dune wetlands in the Lecciona nature reserve, places rich in ponds and natural habitats of great importance for biodiversity.
The coastal strip is bordered at the back by a dense wooded area, mainly Pinus pinaster, sometimes mixed with mesohygrophilous woods.
The sandy environment presents plant formations of the dune series and, from the sea inland, sparse halo-nitrophilous herbaceous formations of the beach and the anteduna area, of mobile dune agropyreta, followed by ammofileta and on the stabilized dunes, by helichrysum and coastal juniper groves with prickly juniper. This last formation is of great naturalistic interest and therefore the main habitat subject to conservation.
