The Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta is a historic jewel in the heart of the Camaiore area, located in the charming historic center. Its history dates back to 1278, but its roots go even deeper into time, being mentioned in a 1260 land registry with the name of Ecclesia Sanctae Mariae de Burgo Campi Majoris.
But what makes this church even more special is its deep devotion to the Name of Jesus, a cult started by San Bernardino in 1424 and made official by the Holy See in 1683. This celebration, which takes place every June 1st, has indelibly marked the spiritual life of the local community.
Another crucial moment in the history of the church was the privilege granted by Pope Urban VI Prignano in 1387, with the concession of the baptismal font. This act marked the detachment of the Church of Santa Maria from the jurisdiction of the Pieve, granting greater autonomy to the parish and consolidating its central role in the religious life of the area.
Over the centuries, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta has received important recognitions, including the title of Collegiate in 1515 and that of Insigne in 1796. These honors attest not only to its religious importance, but also to its cultural and historical significance for the community of Camaiore and beyond.
Today, the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta continues to be a place of prayer, reflection and meeting, where the faithful and visitors can immerse themselves in the beauty of the sacred architecture and the thousand-year-old spirituality that permeates its walls.
