The library of Poggio a Caiano was born in 1972, but went through a great loss of its book heritage following the flood of 1992. After a period of inactivity, it reopened its doors in 1995 and since 2002 it has a new location inside the Medici Stables. Its patrimony today consists of about 24,300 volumes and a careful selection of magazines of all kinds. The local section collects documents concerning Poggio a Caiano and its territory with particular attention to the Medici Villa and to illustrious people of Poggio, such as Filippo Mazzei (1730-1816), Francesco Inverni (1935-1991), Sister Margherita Caiani (1863- 1921), Armando Spadini (1883-1925) and Giorgio Gatti (1948-2021). At the beginning of 2009 the Soffici Section was created and, in close synergy with the Ardengo Soffici Museum (located on the first floor of the Medici Stables), it collects documents and publications by and on the well-known artist. At the end of the same year, a new space was inaugurated which houses the Children's Section and the Children's Reading Space. Guided tours are dedicated to kindergarten, elementary and middle school pupils, through which children have the opportunity to get to know the library, the variety of services offered and the books and DVDs owned. In addition, initiatives and activities are organized every year aimed at promoting books and reading. In the library it is possible to use the following services: reference and bibliographic consultancy; local and interlibrary loan; free access to Internet browsing through the 'Poggio a Caiano Free Wi-Fi' line; activation of the account to access the MLOL digital library (Medialibraryonline).
