The message that the artist Gino Terreni wanted to convey with this magnificent monument dedicated to the victims of the Fucecchio Marsh Massacre of 23 August 1944 and the Tuscan fighters who fell for their country in the 1940-1945 war was 'The amazement and drama in the faces of the innocent!'
The work was inaugurated in the presence of the President of the Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.
This monument recalls, in fact, the astonishment and the drama of the 175 innocent people, mostly women, old people and children, who died, shot by Nazi soldiers, the same ones they had hosted in their homes.
