One of the papers of the Codex Atlanticus, the largest collection of Leonardo's texts and drawings, mentions a place familiar to Leonardo: the mill of the Doccia di vinci (Codex Atlanticus f. 765r.). On the map Leonardo had drawn part of the hydraulic mechanism of a mill that he must have seen in person in his native town and which is still preserved today near Vinci. Il Mulino della Doccia has in fact kept its name through the centuries, to the point that there is no doubt in identifying the object designed by Leonardo with the hydraulic factory that was located just above the castle of Vinci, along the road to the Montalbano.
