You can try to imagine the 14th century walls that served to protect the village, and the four gates through which you entered into the city, each positioned in the direction of the most important roads of the period:
- on the south east there was the Porta Fiorentina, destroyed in 1648 and, as the name suggests, was facing the city of Florence;
- on the south west there was the Porta a Vatignano, destroyed before 1500;
- on the north east the Porta Padulana, destroyed in 1830 (its name was referring to the marshy area near it);
the only one still existing today, on the north west, is the Porta a Palagio, near the Palace of the Podestà.
