The Chiusi wood is also called 'relict' because it is what remains of the forest cover of the Fucecchiese plain. It extends for 418 hectares inside the Municipality of Cerreto Guidi and there you can find beautiful specimens of ash trees, English oaks and Turkey oaks.
In fact, 'Cerreto' gets its name from the word 'cerro' ('turkey oak' in Italian), once very widespread. The wood also contains a marsh residue – 'Paduletta di Ramone' - surrounded by sedge meadows where the ferruginous duck nests. The little mouse of the rice fields, which is a rarity for peninsular Italy, has made the forest its privileged refuge!
