In Pescia, the 'mine of Publio' tells the story of the processing of serene stone. On the mountain of Pescia, at 600 meters above sea level, the historical ethnographic museum of miner and quarryman rises in the ancient village of Vellano, which is the 'capital' of the ten medieval 'castles'. In the hills surrounding the village there were numerous quarries of serene stone that gave work and luster to Vellano and his master quarries. Of these quarries we have not lost traces but unfortunately only one is still active. The processing of serene stone has always been in the blood of the Vellanesi. The quarries have always provided the best quality material that, under the skilled work of the master stonemasons, has turned into small masterpieces of ornamentation or paving, shoulder pads of bridges, window sills and frames famous throughout the region and even outside the continent. The Museum was born in memory of all these 'stone workers', who with their hard work had made Vellano a renowned center. The museum is an itinerary-exhibition of their work tools, with a collection of minerals, a guided tour of everything related to quarries and mines of all kinds. In addition to the service of guided tours of the mine carried out by experts, there are about 2000 volumes on the subject.
